Indian ace shuttler, HS Prannoy has moved up to a career-best ranking of eight after winning bronze at the Asian Championships, as per the latest BWF rankings that was released on Thursday. Apart from him, Kidambi Srikanth has moved two spots up to No. 3 while Sai Praneeth moved up to No. 18.

After having a successful 2017 where the Delhi athlete managed to retain his World No. 10 for some time, his third spot finish at the Asia Badminton Championships has now helped him move two spots up. Prannoy gave a strong fight to defending Olympic gold medalist Len Chong in a grueling 53-minute match that ended 16-21, 18-21 against the Indians at the end. In the process, Prannoy joined the likes of Dinesh Khanna (1965) and Anup Sridhar (2007), who had previously won gold and bronze respectively in the tournament.

This came after a disappointing Commonwealth Games campaign, where Prannoy had lost to England’s Rajiv Ouseph in the individual bronze event. Though India clinched the gold in the mixed team event, Prannoy didn’t play a single game. However, Prannoy has built his performance on some solid displays last year that has seen his ranking going upwards. After winning a Grand Prix Gold in 2017, he followed them by reaching two semi-finals of Super Series and also won his maiden national title.

He defeated Parupalli Kashyap in the US Open final and also reached the semi-finals of the Indonesia Open Super Series where he bowed out after losing to Japan’s Kazumasa Sakai. Prannoy also became the first Indian to beat the big four - Taufik Hidayat (2013), Lin Dan (2015), Chong Wei (twice in 2017) and Chen Long.
