Jadeja century takes Saurashtra to victory on day 2 of Hazare Trophy
Defending champions Karnataka and last year's North zone leaders Punjab registered wins, while Bengal, Mumbai and Railways bit the dust on the second day of the Vijay Hazare trophy on Friday. Ravindra Jadeja hit a century before contributing with the ball as well for Saurashtra in a high-scoring match against MP, while Jharkhand failed to win despite a fighting innings by M S Dhoni.
Jadeja was involved in a 135-run partnership with fellow centurion SP Jackson, who made 111 runs, before joining hands with CS Saini in a 152-run partnership for the fifth wicket. The hosts, who were at 3-53 at one point ended up with a commanding total of 340.
Chasing a mammoth total, Madhya Pradesh seemed to be well in sight of a win until the 38th over needing 88 runs off 72 balls with 7 wickets in hand. However, two back-to-back wickets by Unadkat set the visitors back, from which they never recovered.
Saurashtra 340/5 in 50/50 ov (Ravindra Jadeja 134, Sheldon Jackson 111) defeated Madhya Pradesh 333 in 49.1/50 ov (Jalaj Saxena 133, Shaurya M Sanandia 3/59)
Jharkhand, who faced off against Gujarat, started well enough with a 43-run opening stand. But the side kept losing wickets in regular intervals and never looked in sight of a defend-able total, on what was a flat pitch. Dhoni, who came in three-down, made a 64-ball-44, but could not break loose against a measly Gujarat attack.
Axar Patel starred for Gijarat as he mixed his straight balls well with a few flighted deliveries to hold back a Jharkhand onslaught that never took off. The East zone side ended up making only 177 runs in 47 overs, which Gujarat easily overcame in 40.5 overs, thanks to a 106-run second wicket partnership between Priyank Panchal and Parthiv Patel.
Gujarat 179/4 in 40.5/47 ov (Panchal 62, Parthiv 44, Axar 32*) defeated Jharkhand 177/7 in 47/47 ov (Dhoni 44, Jaggi 34; Axar 2-30, Bumrah 2-30) by six wickets
