South Africa began their 72-day long tour of India on a losing note as India A pulled off a stunning win in the Twenty20 warm-up game at the Palam ground in New Delhi.

Opener Mayank Agarwal struck a 49-ball 87 with 12 fours and two sixes as India A chased down a target of 190 with two deliveries remaining and eight wickets in hand.

AB de Villiers (37) and skipper Faf du Plessis (42 retd hurt) put on 87 for the second wicket to give the tourists a solid start after they had opted to bat.

JP Duminy hit 68 not out and dominated an 83-run stand for the unbroken fourth wicket to guide his team to a competitive total.

Agarwal’s brutal knock set up India A’s successful chase as he put on 119 for the opening wicket with Manan Vohra (56) and 52 for the next with wicketkeeper-bat Sanju Samson (31 not out).

The tourists will play three T20 Internationals followed by five One-Day Internationals and four Tests in what will be their longest-ever tour of India. The opening T20 International will be at Dharamsala on October 2.

Brief scores: South Africa 189-3 in20 overs (AB de Villiers 37, F du Plessis 42 retd hurt, JP Duminy 68 not out) lost to India A 193-2 in 19.4 overs (M Vohra 56, M Agarwal 87, S Samson 31).
