Indian players want coach Ravi Shastri to continue in his role
Ravi Shastri's contract with the Indian team expired after the World T20, and reports earlier suggested that the BCCI is looking to appoint a new head coach. However, it is learnt that the senior players are pleased with the work Shastri has done as Team Director, and want him to be reappointed.
"We consulted the players recently on who they want to be the head of the team and many senior players were all praise for the work done by Shastri, and have said that they would be really happy if he continues in his role. A decision would be made soon," an unnamed source in BCCI was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.
The former Indian international was appointed as the Team Director in 2014 after India faced a disappointing 1-3 loss in the Test series against England. Under his guidance India have reached the semis of the ODI World Cup, won a Test series in Sri Lanka after 22 years, defeated South Africa in the Test series at home, won the T20 series against Australia, lifted the Asia Cup and reached the semi-final of the World T20.
Initial reports had suggested that the BCCI are keen to appoint Rahul Dravid as the new head coach of the senior team. However, Shastri has also found a lot of backing from inside and outside the team.
