IPL 2018 | David Warner steps down as Sunrisers Hyderabad captain
As was widely expected, Sunrisers Hyderabad have revealed that David Warner has relinquished his captaincy and the franchise is yet to pick his successor. In light of the recent ball-tampering incident, Cricket Australia has asked Steve Smith, Warner and Cameron Bancroft to return from South Africa.
It was earlier this week, on Monday, after Rajasthan Royals announced Steve Smith’s stepping down from captaincy, that SRH mentor VVS Laxman had hinted at Warner’s removal from the leadership post as the management was waiting on Australia cricket board’s decision.
After the investigation, CA, on Wednesday, announced that they have asked skipper, the vice-captain and Bancroft to return to Australia with Matthew Renshaw, Glenn Maxwell and Joe Burns going to South Africa as replacements.
While it is still not clear if the explosive opener will play this season as BCCI is yet to take a decision on it, Warner has been one of the significant players in the squad and Hyderabad would have a mammoth task ahead of them to replace him with just under two weeks before the league starts.
According to the latest report by news.com.au, the Australian dressing room has been shattered following the recent incident and it is known that Warner had led the tampering initiative. The reports also state that bad blood between Warner and teammates could be beyond repairable.
“In light of recent events, David Warner has stepped down as captain of SunRisers Hyderabad. The new captain of the Team will be announced shortly.” – K.Shanmugam, CEO, SunRisers Hyderabad
