Reports: Cricket Australia hands Steve Smith and David Warner one-year ban

With increasing pressure from former players and even their Prime Minister, Cricket Australia has reportedly handed Steven Smith and David Warner one-year bans following their ball-tampering confession. Cameron Bancroft has also been handed a ban but its three months less than the senior players.

One moment of madness by the Australian team could now potentially alter the careers of two of their biggest cricketing stars. Things have gone spiraling down for the Kangaroos since Cameron Bancroft was caught on camera tampering the ball during the third Test.

The then skipper, Smith, came out clean in the press conference to took the blame, while also confessing that the team leadership had full knowledge of it. Not only did they lose the game by a massive 322 runs, their heaviest defeat against South Africa since 1991, but also faced a severe backlash from all parts of the cricketing world.

It consequently led to them being asked to step down from their leadership roles in the national team and then the IPL sides as well. They were also asked to return to Australia with the board sending their replacements for the fourth Test.

According to Cricinfo, Smith and Warner will be banned from cricket for a period of one year, while Bancroft will suffer through a nine-month suspension. However, all three would be allowed to challenge the verdicts and also the duration of their punishment as per the CA code of behaviour hearing with the opton of making it public or private.
