The standards of umpiring in the first Test at was a major area of discussion, with both Joel Wilson and Aleem Dar coming under fire for their mistakes. While Day 1 of the Lord's Test seemed to be an improvement, it was the same old story on Day 2, as Dar came up with a shocking on-field decision.
DRS turned out to be a savior for both England and Australia in the first Test at Edgbaston, as no less than 15 incorrect on-field decisions were given, with a vast majority of them being overturned. In particular, Joel Wilson, who was one of the on-field umpires at Edgbaston, came under severe criticism as he saw seven of his decisions being overturned by the players.
All eyes were on the umpires coming into the Lord's Test, and much to everyone's pleasant surprise, both the on-field umpires Chris Gaffney and Aleem Dar were on point, almost getting all decisions correct. However, come Day 3, the nightmares of Edgbaston came back to haunt Dar as he came up with yet another shocking decision, leaving the players stunned.
On the first ball of the 31st over, a fired-up Stuart Broad delivered a good length delivery which nipped back and rapped the pads of Travis Head right in front of the stumps, who, was out of balance, and on his back-foot. On first look to the naked eye, it seemed to be stone dead, with Head looking like he was a goner, especially with the ball striking him low on the pads right in front of the stumps. But to everyone's bemusement, Dar ruled it not-out, signaling it either might be high or might have hit the bat of the Australian.
The English players, in disbelief looking at the decision, immediately reviewed it in the hope of getting it overturned. Eventually, ball tracking showed that the ball would go on to hit the middle of middle, and Dar had no option but to reverse his decision. Although we've seen plenty of dodgy decisions in this Ashes so far, this can very well be a worthy winner for the title of the "Worst decision of the series" award.
