Want India Women to play fearless cricket heading into WT20, shares WV Raman
Indian Womenâs head coach WV Raman shared that he is looking to build a team which isnât dependent on a player and plays a fearless brand of cricket for the upcoming T20 World Cup down under. Raman also opined that the Australia tour of India A will come in handy for WT20 preparations.
WV Raman, Indian womenâs head coach, took over the reins of the women in blue when the team seemed to be going through a difficult phase but seemed to have done a tremendous job in just a year. Gearing up for T20 World Cup 2020 India seem to have evolved into a balanced side as they secured back-to-back T20 series wins over West Indies and South Africa.
Speaking about his run with the team, Raman shared that an increase in fitness standards of the players have worked miracles as far as the performance of the team is concerned. The head coach also talked about pushing the team to play fearless cricket with the World Cup knocking at the door.
âIt wasnât a good start as far as T20s were concerned. We lost games which we should have won. Itâs because our girls didnât play many games in a year and it isnât easy to adapt also when you are catapulted from junior ranks to international cricket suddenly. So we had to improve our fitness levels as well as skill-set. Earlier, the girls would be playing with niggles after featuring in back-to-back games. But the improvement in fitness resulted in reducing muscle-related soreness and niggles and they can focus on their games more," Raman told TOI.
âI have tried to build a team where we arenât dependent on one player. In the T20 format, anyone can become a match-winner. Thatâs the culture I have tried to introduce in the team. I want our team to have all our bases covered and play fearless cricket as we head into the T20 World Cup.â
Dwelling more into the teamâs preparations for the gala event in Australia, Raman pointed out that being overconfident after two series wins ainât right as the team should focus on working more on their game and fitness. Raman also pointed out the importance the Australia tour of India A side in preparing the pacers for Aussie conditions.
âWe had two good series but we canât get complacent. We have to keep working on our game and fitness relentlessly. We still have to close the gap in the medium-pace department. Itâs not that our medium pacers arenât good but itâs just that they didnât have enough game time. Thatâs the reason I suggested to the selectors to pick the fast bowlers and send them on the India A tour of Australia. That will help them to understand which line and lengths to bowl on Aussie pitches and it will help us during the World Cup,â he added.
