While injuries have always been a sad reality of any sport, it becomes all the more difficult to accept when it comes through trivial incidents on field. Virat Kohli might have got a similar scare when he saw injury-returned Hardik Pandya on the floor after bumping into umpire Richard Kettleborough.
Had India not been sitting comfortably in the fourth and final Test of their Australian Tour leading the series 2-1, the absence of Hardik Pandya would surely have been a burning question. The all-rounder had injured his back during India’s Asia Cup campaign and has since been out of the playing eleven. However, with his body responding well to India’s domestic cricket, he was right away called back to the squad as India seemed to struggle against the Kangaroos in Perth.
Though he didn’t make it to the playing eleven with his teammates improving over two games, Kohli decided to use his fielding prowess. The Baroda youngster was seen taking the field on the third day of the final Test as Aussie batsmen struggled to hold their crease against the Indian bowlers.
The incident happened on the fifth ball of the 63rd over when Ravindra Jadeja was bowling to Travis Head. Head had opened his bat face to steer the ball wide of the cover for a single and Pandya, who was positioned there, tried his best to pick up the ball and following it up by a low throw towards Pant. The ball was slightly off target and Pandya’s follow-through saw him bumping into leg umpire Richard Kettleborough.
What looked like a slight nudge by the English umpire saw Pandya falling on the ground before looking back at what hit him. While some would blame the umpire for not getting out of the way, many could also call Pandya India’s own “Neymar” for the seemingly over-exaggerated fall.
