India vs New Zealand | Wickets in first 10 overs important for us, asserts Trent Boult

Ahead of the second ODI against the Indians, Trent Boult has stated that there is a need of picking up wickets in the first 10 overs to put more pressure on the Indian batsmen. The pacer also admitted that the home team was completely outplayed in the first game of the five-match ODI series.

After trailing by 0-1 against the Indians, Kiwi pacer Boult is all geared up for the second match to be played on Saturday in Mount Maunganui. Earlier in the series, the hosts were thrashed by the Indians by eight wickets in the first match in Napier where they chased down a target of 156 quite easily.

Coming out to defend a low total in that game, the Kiwi bowlers managed to pick up only one wicket inside the first 10 overs. However, Boult has stressed on the need of bagging more wickets in the first powerplay which could increase the pressure on the Indian batting unit.

“We know that early wickets in this format kind of kill you. If we can get three wickets in the first 10 overs, we know what pressure that puts on the rest of the team in the shed. They are human and they do make mistakes,” Boult said during the press conference ahead of the second ODI, reported AFP.

“I think it’s obvious we know where we went wrong. We were severely outplayed the other day.”

Boult, who went wicketless in the first ODI, also underlined the importance of the team getting to a good start with the bat as well. The Kiwis had lost both their openers Colin Munro and Martin Guptill for only 18 on the board inside four overs in Napier.

“Obviously put a good target on the board… it’s about batting in partnerships and taking the game deep so we can really cash in in those later overs,” the pacer informed.
