ICC World Cup 2019 | We need to go back to the process that has made us a strong side, says Eoin Morgan
Eoin Morgan has stated that England need to go back to the process that made them a formidable side in this format. England lost their second game of the tournament to a relatively weaker Sri Lankan side which has put their semi-final spot in jeopardy and might have to win all the remaining games.
Sri Lanka created a massive upset by beating tournament favourites England by a 20-run margin to move to the fifth position on the points table. With this defeat, England now find themselves in troubled waters and in a desperate need of winning almost all the remaining games in order to make it to the semi-final.
England had a couple of brilliant individual innings but it wasn’t good enough to gun down the target of 233. Skipper Eoin Morgan has highlighted the importance of partnerships in a run-chase and urged his team to go back to the process that made them a strong unit.
"You look at the basics of a run chase. Partnerships are very important, we struggled to get enough partnerships going. We had a couple of individual innings but that’s not good enough to win a game," Morgan said, reported AFP.
“We are going to lose games in the group stages. We didn’t deserve to win the game, we still need to go back to the process that’s taken us to being a strong side in the world."
England’s star opener Jason Roy, who has wreaked havoc at the top, missed the encounter due to a mistimed injury. Despite his absence, England had enough firepower and have immense depth in their batting. Morgan further highlighted the reason behind England losing the game.
“Obviously we would love him in the side, he’s a huge strength at the top of the order. But that’s not why we lost the game. We bat all the way down. Every single one is quite significant because every single one could establish a partnership that could win you the game,” Morgan added.
