Maintaining composure is essential in a game as a frustrated mind may lead to unintended consequences. Such was the case in the Hundred Women’s curtain-raiser between the Oval Invincibles and the Birmingham Phoenix when Marizanne Kapp’s ill-advised throw r in penalty runs.

The iconic Kennington Oval eagerly awaited the first game of The Women's Hundred as the Birmingham Phoenix squared off against the Oval Invincibles. Phoenix skipper Ellyse Perry won the toss and opted to bowl first on a sunny morning in London. Oval openers Lauren Winfield-Hill and Paige Scholfield got off to a cracking start, taking the score to 28 runs in 18 balls. Furthermore, Scholfield’s explosive 71 off 40, coupled with Alice Capsey’s steady 52 off 40, propelled the Oval side to 150/5 in their 100 deliveries. In reply, the Invincibles’ bowling faced a hiccup when Kapp’s unnecessary throw led to five penalty runs for the home side.

The second ball of the second innings saw the Proteas bowler arrive over the wicket to Phoenix opener Suzie Bates. Kapp delivered a full-length ball angling towards the middle stump that Bates aimed to hit a straight drive, connecting perfectly with the middle of the bat. However, the shot wasn’t hit hard and Kapp collected the ball, immediately venting her frustration. As soon as she snapped the white cherry, she threw it towards Bates, who awkwardly blocked it with her bat to avoid getting hit. Kapp was seen smiling apologetically and Bates didn’t seem bothered by Kapp’s gesture and threw a smile back at her.

However, things took a different turn when on-field umpires Anna Harris and Sue Redfern had a brief discussion with Oval skipper Winfield-Hill. After a brief talk, the umpires awarded five penalty runs to the Phoenix due to ‘dangerous play.’ Kapp was seen with a straight face, reflecting on her conduct that led to so much drama. Seeing this, the Twitterverse couldn't resist and took to social media to discuss the incident.

The MCC Law 41.2.1.1 states: “The umpires shall be the sole judges of fair and unfair play. If an umpire considers that any action by a player, not covered in the Laws, is unfair, he/she shall call and signal Dead ball.”

Adding to it, the 41.2.1.1 law expresses, “If this is a first offence by that side, the bowler's end umpire shall then:

- summon the offending player's captain and issue a first and final warning which shall apply to all members of the team for the remainder of the match.

- warn the offending player's captain that any further such offence by any member of his/her team shall result in the award of 5 Penalty runs to the opposing team.”
