CSK vs RCB | Twitter debates Anuj Rawat's intentions after bizarre overthrow costs RCB extra run

Amongst the many grey areas that exist in the so-labelled 'laws' of the game, the dead ball rule does not come up as often but remains a point of contention for the fans. Confusion over the same ended up costing RCB a run in the IPL season opener against CSK, thus drawing the ire of Faf du Plessis.

‌Royal Challengers Bengaluru's total of 173/6 proved to be significantly subpar at Chepauk on Friday as the Chennai Super Kings breezed through the hunt rather comfortably at the end. The Yellow Army enjoyed contributions throughout their batting order against an impotent bowling lineup and while an overthrow in the second innings proved to be largely inconsequential, it did emerge as a point of interest in an otherwise routine chase.

On the first ball of the 17th over, Ravindra Jadeja slapped Alzarri Joseph's delivery towards deep point for a single. The southpaw at one point seemed intent for a second run and had run halfway up the deck in anticipation but upon being denied by Shivam Dube, he turned around and began walking back towards the crease. However, the throw from the deep struck the stumps at the batter's end thus reigniting Jadeja's interest for a brief second but the ball only travelled a couple of meters away with wicket-keeper Anuj Rawat sprinting after it, thus making the veteran remake his journey back to the crease. Suddenly, Rawat tamely threw the ball towards the non-striker, catching Alzarri off guard given he had his back to the pitch and the Kookaburra rolled past the poles to allow the batters another run. Faf du Plessis quickly ran up to the umpire to argue the ball was already dead but there seemed to have been a belief that the keeper was attempting a sly run-out, which would mean the ball was still in play.

Not all of Twitterati was convinced with the argument and took to social media to debate the conventions around dead balls.

Was it intentional?
