Cricket South Africa has announced the squads for their upcoming white-ball series against Afghanistan and Ireland, set to commence later this month in UAE. The selected squad features the omission of several prominent players, with a clear emphasis on incorporating fresh talent into the team.

‌White ball head coach Rob Walter has revealed the Proteas squad for the forthcoming One Day International series against Afghanistan and the subsequent white-ball tour of Ireland on the official website. Notably, all-rounder Jason Smith and DP Nqaba Peter, both of whom have previously represented South Africa in T20 Internationals, have earned their first ODI call-ups. Additionally, 21-year-old seam-bowling all-rounder Andile Simelane, who has recently featured in the South Africa Emerging and 'A' sides, has been named in both the ODI and T20I squads for the series against Afghanistan.

Talking about the fresh faces, Walter said, “We have decided to give opportunities to some of the fringe players as well as those who have impressed in recent weeks and months. This has been a deliberate move from management, in line with our goal of building a wider pool of players to choose from, as we prepare for the major ICC tournaments taking place over the next 18 months, with a long-term view on the 50-over World Cup in 2027.”

Additionally, Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj, Anrich Nortje, Marco Jansen, Tabraiz Shamsi, Gerald Coetzee, David Miller, and Heinrich Klaasen have not been included in either the ODI or T20I squads. Fast bowler Lungi Ngidi, having recovered from a right calf injury, has been named in all three squads. Kwena Maphaka, who made his debut against the West Indies, is absent due to his final school examinations. Donovan Ferreira is the only player from the West Indies T20I series not to be included in this tour, while Matthew Breetzke has been added to the T20I squad.

South Africa will first compete against Afghanistan in three ODIs from September 18 to 22 at Sharjah Cricket Stadium. They will then move to Abu Dhabi for two T20Is on September 27 and 29, followed by three ODIs against Ireland from October 2 to 7, all taking place at Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium.
