Temba Bavuma will not be participating in the 1st One Day International against Afghanistan in Sharjah. Due to Bavuma's illness, Proteas star Aiden Markram will lead the team as South Africa gears up for their white ball series in the UAE leading up to the Champions Trophy scheduled next year.

‌South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma will not be available for the first ODI against Afghanistan, which begins this evening. Aiden Markram has been selected as the interim captain of the Proteas while Bavuma is unavailable.

Cricket South Africa announced on Twitter that Proteas ODI captain Temba Bavuma will miss the first ODI against Afghanistan on 18 September due to sickness. Aiden Markram will act as the temporary captain.

The upcoming three-game ODI series in UAE will be the first 50-over series between these two teams. The Proteas have emerged victorious in both encounters when facing the two teams in ICC events twice. In the T20 World Cup 2024 semifinal, the two teams faced off, with South Africa winning and securing a spot in the finals. Following their match against Afghanistan, South Africa will compete against Ireland in a two-game T20I and a three-game ODI series. The team is eager for Bavuma to come back soon so they can get ready for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Andile Simelane has been selected for the national team for the first time and will be poised to play the first ODI. Furthermore, spinner Nqaba Peter and all-rounder Jason Smith are ready to make their first ODI appearances after playing in T20Is.
