Not often do you get to see Indian masses hoot and buzz after an Indian cricketer gets out early. A similar case was witnessed at the Chepauk Stadium, Chennai as the crowd ignored Shubman Gill’s poor form due to the arrival of Virat Kohli as India faced off against Bangladesh in the first Test.

Both captains - Najmul Hossain Shanto and Rohit Sharma - wished to make the most out of the early moisture of an uncanny Chennai condition but luck favoured the former during the toss. Hasan Mahmud and Taskin Ahmed didn’t disappoint their captain, making the most out of the overcast conditions by challenging the edges now and then. While Rohit Sharma fell prey to Hasan’s precision with the new ball, Shubman followed a similar route before the crowd greeted India’s No. 4 with huge cheers.

Having middled just a single out of seven balls, Gill’s stay at the crease was shortlived by a length delivery that seamed down the leg stump line. The batter intended to get off the mark with a flick but incurred an inside edge en route to Litton Das behind the stumps. Having bucketed two wickets in the opening spell, Hasan was the centre of celebration for the Bangladeshi players when the Chennai crowd stunned them with cheers. As Kohli marched down the dressing room to stroll into the field, the venue uproared, despite the early couple of wickets for the hosts. Kohli is always renowned as a worshipping figure by the Indian masses, and the Twitterverse abuzzed on seeing so.
