West Indies veteran Dwayne Bravo’s farewell tour in the ensuing Caribbean Premier League has come to a sudden halt due to an unprecedented injury. The all-rounder injured himself in Trinbago Knight Riders’ recent clash against the St Lucia Kings at the Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba.

The all-rounder, who announced that the ongoing season would be his last CPL, incurred a groin injury while fielding during TKR’s encounter against the Kings on Tuesday. In an attempt to catch an aerial ball to dismiss Faf du Plessis, Bravo ended up pulling his groin muscle in the seventh over of the first innings. He was seen clutching his groin muscle before trudging off the field for medical attention. Although he came out to bat at No. 11, it didn’t help the side as the Knight Riders got bundled for 138 and lost by 80 runs.

"I had to take the mantle with DJ going down and Russell isn't 100% fit," Pollard said. "Narine is not playing because he's not fit through injury. Obviously, I had to manage it and it's good that you're in a position where you have qualified [for the playoffs],” TKR captain Pollard cited after the match.

Bravo is one of the most decorated cricketers in the franchise cricket realm with five titles in the CPL. He led the Knight Riders to back-to-back silverware in 2017 and 2018 before leading the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots to their maiden title in 2021. The ‘Champion’ cricketer will turn 41 next month and has already picked up 128 wickets in his CPL career apart from stacking 1139 runs in 73 games.

"Sad to see DJ Bravo finishing in that way," du Plessis said. "In my mind, he's someone that I've admired for a long time. Looks like it's gonna be the end of his CPL. Just want to mention to him that what a player, what a career, what a man! The home people would be super proud of his cricket. He's done so much for everyone around the Caribbean. I would have liked to give him a nice send-off walking off the field, clapping him off. But as I said I was just trying to stay alive [in the Tarouba heat] at the back end. But I feel he needs a special mention,” his Super Kings ally Faf expressed.

Bravo’s injury is a huge setback for the Knights as veterans such as Sunil Narine and Andre Russell are undergoing quadriceps nursing and hamstring management. Although they’re already qualified for the playoffs, TKR will be eyeing to strengthen their position by finishing in the top two.
