Sanjay Manjrekar Picks New Captain Choice for Mumbai Indians

Anupam Pandey

Mumbai Indians did not have a good time in the IPL 2026 season. After losing to Royal Challengers Bengaluru, they became the first to get eliminated from this edition. Following this, Sanjay Manjrekar has made a bold statement on who should be leading the team in the next season.

Mumbai Indians started the IPL 2026 with one of the strongest teams ever. Having players such as Rohit Sharma, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, and many more. All of these players came together with Hardik Pandya, the finest all-rounder at the helm. A few months back, MI looked to be a strong contender to win the IPL 2026.

But a few weeks into the tournament, the team faltered like never before. In its previous match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Mumbai Indians suffered a loss on the final ball and were knocked out of the tournament. Whether it was Hardik Pandya leading the team or Suryakumar Yadav, the result remained almost the same for them.

Sanjay Manjrekar made a bold statement on who could lead the team next. He said, “I think MI might have to look beyond Hardik Pandya. If Hardik was going to come to Mumbai, then they should have got Ashish Nehra as well with him. I'd really like to see Bumrah (as Captain) being given a shot because that is not as much of a burden on him as being a Test captain, where he has to stay fit and ready for every Test match.”

Our Take

Sanjay Manjrekar has surely made a bold statement regarding the captaincy of Mumbai Indians. Hardik Pandya was able to lead the team till the Qualifier 2 last season but this time their performances fell down again. One of the main reasons why the team has not been able to do well is not just the captaincy issues, it is the overall team performance.
