Arsenal’s target should be Premier League title, claims David Luiz

With Arsenal in third place and just one point behind second place Manchester City, David Luiz believes that the club’s target should be the league title. The North London side have struggled to get their hands on a title for over the last fifteen years with the club last winning the title in 2004.

Ever since their incredible Invincible season, 2003/04, under previous boss Arsene Wenger, Arsenal have struggled to win the league title. The North London giants have come close on two occasions but finished second behind Leicester City and Chelsea on both times. But over the last few years the club has struggled to finish amongst the top four sides with them transitioning from one manager to another. That has caused a few problems for the club but eight games into the 2019/20 season and Arsenal sit just one point behind Manchester City.

While Liverpool have dominated proceedings so far, Manchester City sit eight points behind with Arsenal nine points behind the Reds. Yet despite all that, former Chelsea man David Luiz went on to admit that he believes the club’s target has to be the title. A Premier League winner, with Chelsea, the center-back further added that he joined the North Londoners to win trophies as he believes that the club has what it takes to win the league title and maybe even something more in the near future.

"For me, if you start something, and we've just started the Premier League and all of the competitions, if you don't think you can win the competition then you won't start anything in your life. I want to win titles with Arsenal. I want to improve and adapt myself for the style of Arsenal, as a club and how the manager wants us to play. I think we can do that together," Luiz told NBC Sports.

"My vision, my ambition and my will is always to fight for the title and between the club, the players and the coach, we have the possibility to fight for the title. I think this club deserves to shine again."

The Gunners do sit just one point behind Manchester City on the league table but the difference between the top two sides and Arsenal is incredible. While both City and Liverpool have netted well above 20 goals Arsenal have only found the net 13 times so far. But it a strong defence that wins titles and the North Londoners have already conceded 11 goals so far. Only three sides in the top ten have conceded more, with Manchester City two goals behind them, but Luiz added that Unai Emery is working on a plan.

"We talk about this with every single club, Arsenal is no different. I think Unai is working very well with the plan to defend and then the plan to attack. I always say, defending starts with the strikers and through the whole team, and you can see with modern football that the goalkeeper is now like a No 6. We are going to try and improve, we are already doing well and the last few games have showed that we are stronger in a defensive way.

"I want this club to improve in every part of the game. "I think we've started really well and we just lost one game in the Premier League. I think the team is improving and now we are in third in the table but we want to finish this season fighting for the title," concluded the center-back.
