Sreejesh to lead India in the Asian Champions Trophy Hockey

PR Sreejesh will lead an 18-member Indian Men’s Hockey Team in the Asian Champions Trophy to be held at Kuantan in Malaysia beginning October 20. Manpreet Singh has been chosen as the Vice captain of the side, while defenders Jasjit Singh Kular and Birendra Lakra have made a comeback after injury.

After two months of break post a disappointing campaign at the Rio Olympics, the Indian men’s Hockey team will play the Asian Champions Trophy, which will be held between October 20 to 29. Apart from India, Korea, Japan, China, hosts Malaysia, and defending champions Pakistan will also participate in the tournament.

Drag-flick specialist VR Raghunath has been rested making way for Jasjit Singh Kular into the team. Odisha defender Birendra Lakra has also made a comeback to the team after spending a long time in the sidelines due to injury concerns.

Chinglensana Singh Kangujam, Manpreet Singh, Sardar Singh, SK Uthappa and Devindar Walmiki will handle India’s mid-filed possession, whereas the forward line will be manned by Talwinder Singh and Lalit Kumar Upadhyay in the absence of Akashdeep Singh and Ramandeep Singh.

Goal Keeper Akash Chikte has also received a place in the squad alongside skipper Sreejesh.

Chief Coach Roelant Oltmans termed this as an important tournament and said India are the favorites to lift the Trophy.

He said, “The Asian Champions Trophy is an important tournament for us and going by the world rankings, India will go in as favourites to win the title. The team has been upbeat since their return to the camp after the Olympic Games and are eager to start the season on a winning note.”
