The Lanka Premier League is preparing for its upcoming edition. But it has already taken over the headlines for having a weird rule. This rule is related to the star and icon players participating in the tournament.

The management has ruled out the requirements, stating that they should have 250K followers.

Imagine you are about to participate in a T20 league but along with your skills, you also need to be popular on the internet. This has been the case with the Lanka Premier League, as the management has reportedly brought down some new rules for the upcoming edition.

In the auction, players are divided into star and icon categories to receive big biddings. This time, a new criteria has been launched by the management, which has received mixed reactions. For a player to participate in the tournament as a star or icon player, he must have played at least 50 T20I games and 100+ games for any franchise. Sounds normal right?

But there is another requirement which has been added to the same. Players must also have at least 250K followers on their social media, in order to participate in the tournament as a star or an icon. The salary range for these players would be from 60 to 80 thousand US dollars.

Our Take

The new rule which has been launched in the Lanka Premier League has received mixed reactions. But it should be noted that this rule is applicable only for the star or icon players. A star would not just be defined with the skills and experience he has in the game, he will be defined with his fan following too. Several players such as David Miller, Babar Azam, Dasun Shanaka, and more have registered in this category.
