Reports | Graham Reid’s appointment delayed as sports ministry objects to high salary
According to The Amar Ujala, the sports ministry has objected the salary to be paid to the new hockey coach Graham Reid which has resulted in his appointment being delayed. Reid was almost certain to be appointed this week as Hockey India was only awaiting a final nod from the ministry.
The post of the chief coach of the Indian men’s hockey team has been vacant since the exit of Harendra Singh following the World Cup in December. Hockey India and Sports Authority of India (SAI), however, had zeroed down on former Australia player and coach Graham Reid for the important position and had submitted his name for the final nod from the ministry. Reid had demanded a salary of $15000 per month for the post.
Meanwhile, according to the newspaper, the sports ministry is not satisfied with the high salary to be paid to the coach and objected his appointment leading to the delay in proceedings. As per the report, union sports minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore will now take the final call on the appointment of Reid.
Apart from the salary, the ministry also objected Reid’s condition of going to his home country five to six times a year.
In the history of foreign coaches working for the Indian hockey team, Roelant Oltmans was the highest paid one and he used to get $15000 per month. In the current set up of Hockey India,
