15-year-old Sonam Malik wins gold at World Cadet Wrestling Championships

India’s Sonam Malik clinched the gold medal in the 56 Kg category of the World Cadet Wrestling Championships in Athens, Greece, yesterday. Another Indian wrestler Neelam also managed to bag the bronze medal in the tournament as beating Roxana Alexandra of Romania 6-4 in 43 Kg category.

Indian grappler Malik played a bout for the gold medal on Thursday where the 15-year-old successfully outclassed her Japanese opponent, Sena Nagamoto, by a margin of 3-1. The Indian player managed to take a 2-0 lead in the first round of the game and then added a point just after her opponent had claimed one point at the end of the bout.

It was a good day for India in the event as Neelam also ended the tournament with a medal. She thrashed her Romanian opponent Alexandra 6-4 in the 43 Kg category.

There are more medals on the line as wrestler Anshu is set to face Naomi Ruike of Japan in the 60 Kg category in the gold medal match.

Earlier, Anshu had reached the final after beating Romania Wrestler Capezan in the preliminary round. Then she defeated Russia’s Parokhina in the quarterfinal after which she handed an exit to Hungary’s Bihar to book a place in the final.

Four other wrestlers Simran, Manisha, Minakshi, Karuna will also fight for Bronze Medal in different weight categories.
