After Sushil Kumar and Rahul Aware struck Gold yesterday, Haryana-born Bajrang Punia followed suit as he bagged a Gold in the Men's Freestyle 65 kg category. This is India’s fifth medal in wrestling at the 2018 CWG with Pooja Dhanda, Masuam Khatri, and Divya Kakran in line for medals too.

24-year old Bajrang Punia, who was bestowed with the prestigious Arjuna award in 2015, was considered as one of the favorites to lift the Gold medal after he won the Silver in Glasgow at CWG 2014. Punia began the day with a stunning win against Kiwi wrestler Brahm Richards in the opening bout where he ran riot to make his way to a 10-0 victory by technical superiority. In doing so, Punia set up an encounter with Amas Daniel of Nigeria in the quarter-final encounter.

Punia won the second match in a similar fashion as he beat Daniel by the same margin an emerged victorious by technical superiority. Punia was slated to face Canadian Vincent De Marinis in the semi-final to before he could secure the gold.

In another display of his marvelous abilities, Punia beat Marinis by the same margin as he made his way to the finals of Men's Freestyle 65 kg category against Welsh wrestler Kane Charig in the last bout of the day.

And as fate would have it, Punia continued to dominate his opponent as he eased out a comfortable 10-0 win in the final to down Charig and win by technical superiority. None of Punia’s opponents could take a single point away from him which proved that he was better than the rest of the wrestlers in the 65 kg category.
