Indian Wrestlers continued to dominate in Gold Coast as the latest medal came from the 125 kg category when wrestler Sumit beat Tayab Raza of Pakistan to add to the medal tally in Australia. Sumit got a walk-over in the first and last bout against Claude Mbianga and Sinivie Boltic respectively.

It is another joyous day for Indian wrestling as wrestler Sumit Malik bagged Gold in the 125 kg category today, after medals from Sushil Kumar, Babita Kumari and others lit up the first day of the wrestling events.

Sumit began the day with a walkover from Cameroonian opponent Claude Mbianga, who had to miss out on the event due to injury. This meant that Sumit earned a 5-0 victory by technical superiority. In doing so, Sumit set up next match with Canadian wrestler Korey Jarvis in a bid to make his way to the podium this year.

Jarvis proved to be a worthy opponent to Sumit as he had to indeed battle his way throughout the bout in order to progress further. Sumit eventually won by a score of 6-4 to set up a meeting with Pakistan’s Tayab Raza in the next round of the event.

An injury to Nigerian wrestler Sinivie Boltic meant that, if Sumit could out wrestle Raza he would secure a Gold in the Men’s 125 kg category. Sumit proved his mettle as he dominated the bout against Raza where he emerged victorious by a scoreline of 10-4 to bag the Gold medal in the 125 kg category.

After Sumit’s win, female wrestler Vinesh Phogat secured Gold in the Women's 50 kg freestyle category herself to add to an already impressive medal tally amongst the Indian wrestling contingent in Gold Coast.
