Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia has stated that an injury caused him a lot of pain but he virtually forgot the pain in the pursuit of a medal at the World Championships. The pursuit led him to the finals of 65 kg freestyle wrestling category where he lost the final bout to win the silver medal.

All wrestling fans know that Bajrang Punia won a silver medal in the 65 kg freestyle wrestling category of the World Wrestling Championship but most don’t know that he did so bearing immense pain from an elbow injury. He also asserted that the revelation comes late because he did not want people to think that he was making excuses for losing the final match.

"I was in immense pain, but couldn't have afforded to pull out of the Worlds since it was a big event. My physio gave me injections and painkillers to keep the pain under control. Painkillers were given to me during the bouts as well. I forgot the pain in my pursuit for a medal. I will be away from the mat for 7-8 weeks," Bajrang told TOI.

Since he played the World Championship under medication and taking painkillers the injury meanwhile seems to have gone from bad to worse. He is expected to be out of the play for at least two months thus missing the Nationals which are scheduled to be held from November 29 to December 2 in Uttar Pradesh.

"I suffered injury to ligament of the right elbow joint a week prior to the start of the Worlds. It happened during training. But, I didn't disclose it to anyone, else people would have said I was making excuses after losing the final," he added

While missing the finals is fine but Punia will be wary of the fact that he would need time to recover and be in his prime for the Tokyo Olympics which are scheduled for next year. The road for Olympics will begin from the Qualification events which begin much earlier than the Olympic event itself.
