Bajrang Punia clinches gold at UWW ranking series in Bulgaria
Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia has won a gold medal in the 65 kg freestyle category at the Dan Kolov-Nikol Petrov tournament in Ruse, Bulgaria. On the other hand, Vinesh Phogat won three bouts and entered the final of the 53 kg category in the tournament which is a part of UWW ranking series.
It was a great start to a fresh season for Punia as he bagged a gold medal in the 65 kg freestyle category in Bulgaria by defeating USA’s Jordan Oliver 12-3 in the summit clash on Saturday. He collected the maximum ranking points from the competition which is also a part of the ranking series of United World Wrestling (UWW).
Since he failed to bag a medal at the World Championships a couple of years ago in Paris, Punia has won 10 medals in 10 international events. The score was tied at 3-3 at the end of the first period but the Indian wrestler dominated well after that to win the final and take the gold medal.
India has another chance of winning a gold medal and that is in the women’s 53 kg category as Vinesh Phogat dominated against her three opponents to book a place in the final of the tournament. One of her three wins was against World Championships silver medallist Sarah Hildebrandt.
Earlier in the tournament, Pooja Dhanda had claimed a gold medal in the 59 Kg category while Sakshi Malik had bagged a silver in the 65 kg category for India. Among the male wrestlers, Sandeep Tomar had managed to win a silver medal in the 61 kg category.
