Sri Lanka accepts request to host Indo-Pak cricket series
Sri Lanka Cricket’s interim committee met yesterday and gave the green light for Pakistan to play India in a bilateral series in the island nation, according to reports. The BCCI and the PCB chiefs had met in Dubai on Sunday to discuss the future of the bilateral tie.
After weeks of dilly-dallying about the proposed bilateral series between India and Pakistan, both boards seemed to have reached a consensus to hold the series in Sri Lanka. "The request came from the Pakistan Cricket Board who are the hosts to interim committee chairman Sidath Wettimuny," Sri Lanka Cricket interim committee vice-president Kushil Gunasekera was quoted as saying by Ceylon Daily News.
Kushil Gunasekera also confirmed that the interim committee has given permission for the series, but that the final decision will be taken by the Sri Lankan Ministry of Sports. "The interim committee met today and was happy to accommodate such a series and gave its approval for it to take place in Sri Lanka. It needs to be ratified by the Minister of Sports," he said.
According to media reports, the final decision about the series will be made only on November 27. The presence of England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chief Giles Clarke during the ICC meeting in Dubai, who was mediating between the BCCI and the PCB, seemed to have clinched the deal for the series. The BCCI also proposed Bangladesh as an alternative venue, but the Bangladesh Premier League which will go on till December 15 put Sri Lanka as the only alternative venue, according to a report in The Hindu.
The series, according to the International Cricket Council’s Future Tours programme, was to feature two Tests and five ODIs. However, media reports from the island nation predict the possibility of the series being confined to three ODIs and two T20s.
