Talk about Bumrah, not Amir: Rohit Sharma

Talk about Bumrah, not Amir: Rohit Sharma

Indian opener Rohit Sharma thinks that the excitement around pacer Mohammad Amir is being overblown, calling the left handed seamer a normal bowler. Rohit believes Jasprit Bumrah should be the one to dominate the headlines instead, in what could turn out to be a double-edged compliment.

Mohammad Amir may have dismissed Rohit Sharma for a duck, but the Mumbai batsman believes it’s too early to hype up the Pakistan quickie. In an unexpected outburst, Rohit said “Stop talking about him already” dismissing the hype centred on Amir, adding “He isn’t the only bowler, Pakistan have 5 other bowlers who are doing well for them”.

After team-mate Virat Kohli had labelled the left handed Amir “world-class” for his devastating spell when the 2 sides met in Mirpur last month, Rohit Sharma seemed to have a differing opinion, saying the comparisons to legendary Wasim Akram were unjustified. “There is just so much hype around him, I don't think it is right to give him too much hype after one match. He is good but he needs to prove it over and over again. Now people are comparing him to Wasim Akram and all that. He is just a normal bowler, on that given day if he is good, he is good. It is not as if he turns up and blows everyone away.”

The Indian opener believes the attention should instead be on rising Indian bowler Jasprit Bumrah who has been one of the standout performers for the Indian team this year, with excellent performances specially in the T20 format.

“Bumrah is already starting to make a mark. I would tell you that instead of talking about Amir you should talk about Bumrah. A rare talent like Bumrah, he is young and the way he has begun his career – he has a long way ahead no doubt – I think he will do something special for the country.”
