BCCI keen to hold 'mini' IPL overseas in September

The BCCI are contemplating the possibility of holding a 'mini IPL’ on foreign shores in September, when none of the Test playing nations will be in action. However, they are likely to face stiff competition from the ICC, who are eager to use that window for an international T20 tournament.

"It can be a great testing ground for what is possible in terms of reaching out to the Indian fan base abroad. It can be made financially viable if a market like the US is explored. Frankly, if the broadcaster finds it appealing then a lot of things fall into place," a source close to developments was quoted as saying by TOI.

The BCCI are looking to bring in this new tournament to replace the scrapped Champions League T20, which was not successful financially. However, the ICC are also planning to use the same window to launch a new international T20 tournament or roll back the decision to host World T20 once every four years.

The world governing body of the sport are reportedly reconsidering their decision following the huge success of the World T20 hosted in India earlier this year.

"Bilateral T20 Internationals are both rare and devoid of any context. But international tournaments get great numbers. It makes sense for ICC to revert to the old logic of having one ICC event every year and thereby one World T20 every two years," the source told TOI.
