Cricket Australia have handed the ODI captaincy responsibility to Test skipper Tim Paine for the all-important tour against England. However, selectors didn't name Paine as the permanent captain and are yet to decide who will lead the defending champions at the 2019 World Cup.

After the infamous ball-tampering fiasco, which led to the ban of regular captain Steve Smith and Vice-captain David Warner for one year each, Cricket Australia named wicket-keeper batsman Tim Paine, as the skipper of a 15-man squad for the five-match series against England which is scheduled to be held this June.

“Tim is a strong leader and will captain the side for this series, supported by Aaron," selector Trevor Hohns said in a media release as quoted by India Today.

Selectors have also named Aaron Finch as the ODI team's vice-captain in place of Warner and named him as captain of the Twenty20 side also in a press release on Tuesday(May 8). Australia will play five one-dayers and a T20I match against England from June 13-27, a warmup for the global tournament in the same country next year, before heading to Zimbabwe for a T20 tri-series against the host nation and Pakistan starting on July 1.

However, Cricket Australia claimed Tim Paine is not going to be the permanent captain which is confusing as the 2019 ODI World Cup is just one year away. It is to be noted that, though Steve Smith has been banned for one year, he has been barred to do the captaincy of the national squad for 2 years.

"A decision on a permanent one-day captain will be made in due course,” said Cricket Australia.

South Australia's Alex Carey, a wicketkeeper-batsman, has been included in the ODI squad but Paine will carry on with gloves in England. The squad features an uncapped player in D'Arcy Short, a left-handed opener who impressed in his debut T20I series against New Zealand in February, while Test spinner Nathan Lyon has been recalled for the first time since 2016 looking at the number of left-handers in England squad.

"England potentially have a number of left-handers in their side and we look forward to seeing what (Lyon) can produce with the white-ball in English conditions," said Hohns.

Australia will be without leading pacemen Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, who was injured during the gruesome series against South Africa and are not expected back until the Test tour against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates. Josh Hazlewood will lead the pace battery which includes Kane Richardson, Jhye Richardson, Andrew Tye and Billy Stanlake. The T20 squad also features a pair of uncapped players, with Queensland all-rounder Jack Wildermuth and his spin bowling teammate Mitchell Swepson.
