The MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai may not host any of India’s matches at the ICC World Twenty20 2016, hosted by the country between March 11 and April 3 next year. Chennai will also miss out on matches involving Sri Lanka due to the political scenario of the Tamil-Sinhala conflict in the state.

Chepauk Stadium in Chennai, which has witnessed iconic matches of India, may not host any of India’s matches at the World T20 extravaganza next year. BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur told reporters about the problems faced by Chennai after the joint committee meeting at the BCCI headquarters at Mumbai on Thursday. “In Chennai there is a problem; three stands don’t have a completion certificate. So, we have kept pending the details of the matches and the schedule which was to be submitted to the ICC. But the committee has met and worked out the details, “reported The Hindu.

Thakur, however, refused to completely rule out Chennai hosting any matches. “We have not ruled out Chennai. The only issue is which matches can be played in Chennai. “There are certain limitations also. You can’t play Sri Lanka over there, three stands are not complete,” Thakur said as reported by The Hindu.

In the draft list of fixtures prepared earlier in the year by the organising committee, Chennai was scheduled to host the match between India and Australia. Chennai’s miss may end up being Bengaluru’s gain as the city is likely to host India-Australia match. Bengaluru missed out on hosting any of India’s matches in the draft list of fixtures.

The BCCI has gone past the deadline to finalise the tournament venues. As of now, Mohali and Mumbai are scheduled to host the semifinals, while the Eden Gardens in Kolkata is scheduled to stage the final.
