Amit Mishra released on bail after being arrested on charges of assault
Indian bowler Amit Mishra has been released on bail after being arrested by the Bengaluru police on Tuesday. The case has witnessed a series of dramatic events over the past week, which began unfolding when the Bengaluru police booked him on charges of assault brought by a woman, who initially told the media about her intention to withdraw the case, but later backed away from that statement.
The 32-year-old, who played in the fifth ODI match against South Africa, was booked for alleged assault of a woman in his hotel room in Bengaluru last month when he was in the city for a training camp.
Initially, according to media reports, the unnamed women softened her stand on this issue and was looking to withdraw the case, as she did not want Mishra to “suffer too much”.
In a statement made to PTI news agency she said, ““Two days after lodging the complaint, I approached the police station and told them that I have in principle decided to withdraw the case”.
However, on Tuesday the Bengaluru police arrested the Indian international, before releasing him on bail. Reports claim that the leg-break bowler was interrogated for three hours and has been booked under Indian Penal Code sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 328 (causing hurt with intent to commit an offence).
The women has also denied any intentions of withdrawing the case and insisted that she wanted Amit Mishra to speak to her in front of the cops.
“I won’t withdraw the complaint against Amit (Mishra). I am hurt physically, mentally and emotionally by the cricketer.
“He knew I was going to the police and kept saying he will come to Bengaluru and sort out the matter. I want Amit to come in front of the police and talk to me,” the women was quoted as saying by the Hindu.
Meanwhile, the Indian cricket board (BCCI) is to look into the charges leveled against Mishra. “I can say that BCCI has taken note of the matter. We are trying to find out the details of the case. The moment we get details, we will look into it,” senior BCCI official Rajiv Shukla told reporters.
Leg-spinner Mishra is in the Test squad for the first two matches against South Africa. Shukla said the case will have no bearing on his selection to the XI. “Unless BCCI takes a decision, selectors can pick him. The question of eligibility arises only when BCCI takes a decision,” Shukla said.
