Reigning IPL champions Mumbai Indians have signed New Zealand opener Martin Guptill as the replacement for Lendl Simmons, who was ruled out of the IPL with an injury. The 29-year-old is ranked No. 3 in ICC's T20 player rankings, and will be joining the MI camp on the back of an impressive World T20.

Martin Guptill surprisingly went unsold in the IPL auction held at the start of the new season, despite being listed as one of the marquee players at a base price of INR 50 lakh. His addition will add a lot a fire power to the Mumbai Indians lineup, after Lendl Simmons was ruled out for the rest of the tournament with an injury to his lower back – the same injury which saw him miss the start of the World T20.

Guptill is yet to feature in the IPL, although he has played in the Big Bash League with Sydney Thunder. Incidentally, he was also announced as the captain of Guyana Amazon Warriors for the 2016 edition of the Caribbean Premier League, replacing Denesh Ramdin at the helm. Guptill was the top scorer for the New Zealand side in the World T20, which reached the semi-final of the tournament. He scored 140 runs at a strike rate of 157.30, including a match-winning 80-run knock against Pakistan.
