Chepauk Super Gillies registered their first win in the India Cements Tamil Nadu Premier League thanks to a commanding 67-run win over Karaikudi Kaalai at Dindigul on Sunday. This was Kaalai’s second loss in as many matches as they were bowled out for 128 in 17.1 overs by the Super Gillies.

Brief scores: Chepauk Super Gillies 195 for 9 (R Sathish 46, 22b, 3x4 , 3x6, Gopinath 43, 26b, 4x4, 3x6, Sonu Yadav 4/27, R Rajkumar 2/29) beat Karaikudi Kaalai 128 (M Vijay Kumar 46, 20b, 3x4, 5x6, R Srinivasan 38, 34b, 4x4, R Alexander 3/28, Antony Dhas 4/9) by 67 runs.

Opting to bat first, Chepauk accelerated from the third over as the pitch continued to assist batsmen. Mohan Prasath dismissed Thalaivan Sargunam and got the first wicket. Also, Shanta Moorthy gave away 22 runs in the sixth over as Gillies ended the power-play at 67 for 1. S Saravanan was dismissed by Sonu Yadav as the latter picked up four wickets.

Rajkumar later dismissed Yo Mahesh but then Gillies skipper R Sathish (46) fought back with a flurry of strokes. Shahjahan then dismissed Gopinath (43) when the latter looked in pristine touch. Suresh Babu, who gave away 37 runs in three overs, was taken to the cleaners by Sathish and U Sasidev. Satish and Sasidev stitched a partnership of 50 before the latter holed out to Srinivasan at midwicket off Yadav.

Later, Satish and Antony Das shifted gears to take the team closer to 200. A good last over by Yadav, which included two wickets and a run-out of the last three deliveries, meant that Chepauk finished on 195 for 9. Kaalai gave away 24 extras which also included 22 wide balls. Their chase started in the worst possible manner as R Sathish’s direct hit dismissed Anirudha Srikanth.

Meanwhile, Vijay Kumar (46) played well to knock off runs and contributed to the 69 runs in the power-play. That was the only bright spot for Karaikudi as Vijay Kumar’s wicket led to a run-drought and also saw the back of skipper Badrinath. R Alexander (3 for 28) and Sai Kishore (1 for 23) bowled in tandem and choked batsmen of runs. Dhas, introduced in the 13th over, struck with the very first delivery as Kaalai lost half its team with only 104 runs on the board.

With the required run-rate increasing, R Srinivasan (38) tried to up the ante but did not receive enough support from the other end. Dhas then dismissed R Rajkumar and cleaned up Srinivasan which left Kaalai reeling at 118 for 8. Chepauk’s bowlers later took the last two wickets and won the game comprehensively.
