In a minor cause for delight to the squad touring down under, the Indian Test team has regained the No.1 spot in the ICC Test rankings today after a gap of almost five years. The top spot came courtesy England's thrashing of South Africa 2-0 in the home Test series on Saturday, which saw them slip from the first spot to third.

India with 110 points now leads the ICC Test Rankings with Australia one point away in the second spot. India last held the top spot back in 2011, and they might not hold it for much longer given that the Men in Blue are not slated to play a Test for the next five months. With Australia scheduled to play New Zealand in February, if the Aussies are able to beat the Kiwis 1-0, they will go top of the table dethroning the Indians.

South Africa’s reign at the top began in 2014, but the Proteas have been in a poor run of form the past season losing five of their last seven Test matches to slip to third place in the rankings. Incidentally, India’s reign at the top was also ended by England with Andrew Strauss’ men thumping the Indians 4-0 in the away series in 2011.

On the contrary, the Indian team led by Virat Kohli has enjoyed a very good season with victories in Sri Lanka (2-1) and in the home series against South Africa (3-0).
