‘He gets pretty emotional out there’: Smith not impressed with Kohli’s send-off
Australian captain Steve Smith has criticised Indian Test captain Virat Kohli’s animated celebration at Adelaide Oval after the Aussie batsman fell for 21 edging a catch to Kohli. Smith’s wicket proved to be the turning point in the game as India registered a 37-run victory to go 1-0 up in the T20 series.
The Indian cricketer celebrated animatedly gesturing to Smith to concentrate on his batting instead of talking on the mic. The Aussie batsman was talking to Channel Nine’s (Australian broadcaster) commentary team before his dismissal. Speaking to Fox Sports about the incident, Smith expressed his displeasure with Kohli’s actions and labelled the Indian as ‘bit emotional.’
“I don’t think you need to do that kind of thing when someone gets out,” Smith told Fox Sports.
“It’s fine to have a little bit of banter when you’re out in the field, but when someone’s out I don’t really think that’s on. He gets pretty emotional out there, doesn’t he?”, he added.
Kohli has been a part of some banter in this series with James Faulkner, telling the Aussie all-rounder "I've smashed you enough in my life, just go and bowl”, during the third ODI at MCG.
Speaking about his dismissal, Smith blamed it on the poor shot and dismissed the suggestions that live commentary may have played a part in it.
“It was on at the time but for me, it was just a bad shot. I tried to chip one over the top for two rather than trying to hit him for four or six. It was my fault and I’ve just got to be better next time,” Smith said.
The second match of the T20 series is set to take place on Friday at the MCG, and a renewal of the rivalry between Smith and Kohli won’t be on show with Smith along with Warner being rested ahead of their departure for New Zealand on Saturday morning.
