Hailing the decision of Virat Kohli to play County Cricket, David Gower has opined that the player’s eagerness to play for Surrey aptly describes his priorities for Test cricket. The former England captain also underlined that It will be a nice experience for Surrey to have Kohli at their disposal.

Virat Kohli is all set to play county cricket in his bid to prepare for the upcoming Test series against England in August-September. While he is facing criticism for missing the historic Test match against Afghanistan next month, legendary English cricketer, David Gower has opined that his decision to play for Surrey will raise the profile of the marquee England-India Test series, scheduled to be played in July, this year. In an interview with Mumbai Mirror, the former England captain highly praised the current Indian captain for his decision and noted that Kohli’s eagerness to play for Surrey also points out how he has given the importance to Test cricket.

“Playing in England in August, the conditions will be more favorable (to Kohli). Being the captain, he wants to get a good result too. Personally, for people like me, it is good to see him approach this whole tour from the point of view of giving himself and his team the best chance of success in all formats. By coming here, he is making the world aware of how much he respects Test cricket,” observed David Gower.

During India’s last four tours of England in 2014, which they lost 1-3 after being 1-0 up after two Tests, Kohli managed 134 runs at 13.40 in five Tests, with the highest score of 39 and six single-digit scores. That series still remains as a mark of ordinariness in Kohli’s extraordinary career, though the Indian Captain himself admitted that those failures persuaded him to sharpen his batting skills.

David Gower, who had played 117 Tests and 114 ODIs in an international career that spanned from 1978 to 1992, has also figured out Kohli as the best in the world and said since his 2014 England tour was disappointing, the player wants to prove his caliber in this tour of England.

“Virat is one of the great players in the world at this moment. We know that his last tour here (in 2014) was disappointing. So, I know he has a list of things on his agenda. He wants to prove that he can make as many runs in England as he does elsewhere,” he recalled.

The former England captain also underlined that It will be a nice experience for Surrey to have Virat Kohli at their disposal and a good learning curve for players of Surrey County Club.

“It is a very good thing for him. It’s a very good thing for Surrey too. It is a coup by them. They will be delighted to have him – both as a player and someone they can learn from,” concluded Gower.
