The Sheffield Shield encounter between West Australia and Victoria at the MCG has been called off after play stopped mid way on day one due to a dangerous pitch. CA has informed through a statement that if it fails to reschedule the fixture, both the teams will be awarded three points each.

After calling off the proceedings of the opening day of a Sheffield Shield encounter at the MCG, the match has been abandoned due to dangerous pitch at the historic ground. The match between Western Australia and Victoria was called off after a second inspection on day two of the fixture.

Captains Peter Handscomb and Shaun Marsh, umpires Phillip Gillespie and Geoff Joshua and match referee Bob Parry consulted with MCG operations and ground staff prior to the scheduled start of play on day two.

"A decision was taken that no further play would be possible in the match," Cricket Australia (CA) said in a media release.

While quite some deliveries rose awkwardly off the surface during the course of the 40 overs of play on the opening day, umpires decided to stop play after a Andrew Fekete delivery climbed sharply to hit Marcus Stoinis on the ribs. Western Australia were 89 for 3 when play was called off for the day.

However, CA have assured of using a different surface for the Boxing Day Test between Australia and New Zealand scheduled at the MCG on December 26. Furthermore, CA also stated in a media release that should they fail to reschedule the encounter, both the teams will be awarded three points each for the suspended fixture.
