BBL | Galvanized team effort propels Hurricanes to final in Hobart with 12-run Qualifier win over Sixers
Hobart Hurricanes sailed through to their third Big Bash League final, in Hobart on Tuesday, with a comfortable win over the Sydney Sixers. Mitchell Owen's powerplay heroics and Tim David's blitz at the end helped post a total of 173/7 which proved too much for the Sixers after being reduced to 5/3.
Brief score: HH 173/7 (20) [McDermott 42(31), Jewell 40(41); Chohan 2/28 (4)] defeat SS 161/5 (20) [Silk 57*(44), Patterson 48(33); Gannon 2/10 (3)] by 12 runs
Asked to bat first, Mitchell Owen got Hobart Hurricanes off to a roaring start with a six and four in the opening over to fetch 15 from it. By the end of the four-over powerplay, he had added a couple more boundaries and maximums each -- all while Caleb Jewell struggled at the other end -- to make the score read a handsome 47/0. However, Owen's cameo came to an end as soon as the field spread as he holed out to Jafer Chohan and Matthew Wade followed soon after courtesy a flying stunner from Jack Edwards at point to seize momentum back in the visitors' favour. Ben McDermott's arrival did little to change that as Jewell and him trudged along t add just 52 runs in their 50 ball stand before the latter ultimately departed for a less than run-a-ball 40. However, the game took a quick turn thereafter as Tim David used the Power Surge to break the shackles with a blistering 10-ball knock of 25 even as wickets kept falling at the other end, to almost singlehandedly take the team to a competitive 173/7.
In response, Riley Meredith delivered a scorching new ball to scalp both Josh Phillippe and Moises Henriques, touching 150ks in the process. Cameron Gannon proved to be the perfect partner in crime by dispatching Jack Edwards for a duck and conceding just seven in his first two overs to leave the Sixers reeling at 17/3 at the end of the powerplay. Nevertheless, Kurtis Patterson and Jordan Silk joined hands thereafter to sail the team out of trouble with a stable 75-run stand but it was not enough to keep the required run rate from climbing to nearly 11. Once Patterson fell for a 33-ball 48 in the 12th over, the momentum further shifted in Hobart's favour and the equation read a daunting 75 off the final six overs when the visitors opted for the Power Surge. However, Lachlan Shaw and Silk could only combine for 20 courtesy some brilliant bowling by Nathan Ellis and Meredith and the team did not look back from thereon as Chris Jordan comfortably defended 21 in the final over, despite a settled Silk and the explosive Ben Dwarshius at the crease.
Real death over!
Chris Jordan has bowled this last over magnificently - the Canes will host the final! #BBL14
