VIDEO | Virat Kohli argues with umpire after inconclusive evidence costs India a review
Going for the verdict so soon has been a norm in this World Cup and when that made its appearance at Edgbaston today, Virat Kohli was visibly furious. The skipper turned animated as India’s review was taken away despite the third umpire not having clear evidence of a bat-pad upon an LBW request.
Fair or not, anyone who will succeed MS Dhoni as India’s keeper will be judged by the colossal throne of the glorious Jharkhandi for the fact that he has been unquestionably the best person to judge an LBW appeal over the years. Today, as soon as the former skipper left the field to hand Rishabh Pant a chance to keep behind the stumps, India had a tough call to make instantly which eventually resulted in an argument between Kohli and the on-field officials.
On the second delivery of the 12th over, Mohammed Shami bowled a delivery that nipped back into Soumya Sarkar and there was a loud shout for LBW. However, that hardly impacted the on-field umpire as he rejected the appeal but Shami was so confident that he almost convinced the Indian skipper to oblige him. Kohli pondered for a few seconds and after a brief consultation with Pant, who also didn’t have any clear idea, went for the review.
Aleem Dar had a close look on the UltraEdge and found a huge spike the moment ball crossed past the bat and hit the pad. He used split-screen to have an understanding of the impact but that was not enough as Dar, after several looks, concluded that the replay was too inconclusive to further check the ball tracking. Given the decision was made with a look from UltraEdge and not ball-tracking, which would have shown the umpire’s call anyway, India lost the review straightaway.
The Indian skipper, who had to be content with a similar decision against Afghanistan a few days ago, was not a happy man after the decision and charged towards Marais Erasmus. His gesticulation clearly showed his anger as he walked away furiously.
