ICC World Cup 2019 | What will happen in case the semi-final is washed out?
With the group stage encounter between India and New Zealand washed out due to rain, rain might play spoilsport once again in their semi-final encounter, with showers expected on Tuesday. However, in case of a washout on Tuesday, the game will be played on Wednesday - the reserve day.
Weather report for Tuesday
A 60% chance of rain is expected tomorrow at Old Trafford, as India and New Zealand are set to take on each other in fairly cold and cloudy conditions. However, the showers are expected to be just spotty ones, and so a complete washout is not expected for the day. Strong winds are also expected throughout the morning, and hence, keeping the weather in mind, both captains might very well be tempted to bowl first in the crunch encounter.
What will happen in case of a washout?
The washout between India and New Zealand in the group stages ended up benefiting both sides as they finished First and Fourth respectively. But unlike the group stages, the semi-final matches come along with a reserve day, and so in case of a washout on Tuesday, the game will be played once again on Wednesday, at the same venue.
However, in case of the reserve day also getting washed out, the team which finished higher on the points table will go through, and thanks to finishing at the top, India will go through to the final in such a scenario. Similarly, a complete washout between England and Australia would also mean that Australia will go through to the Final on the virtue of finishing second.
What will happen in case of a tie?
In case of a tie, the teams will settle things through a super over. And in the rare case of the super over ending as a tie, the teams which finished higher in the points table will proceed to the Final, meaning India and Australia will meet in the Final in case of such a scenario.
