Following MS Dhoni and Jos Buttler’s footsteps in finishing games, says Alex Carey
Wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey, who is keen on improving his game each day, revealed that he takes inspiration from the likes of MS Dhoni and Jos Buttler in finishing games. Taking up the gloveman duties for Australia against Sri Lanka, on Sunday, Carey was put down the order but is unfazed by it.
Making way for David Warner and Aaron Finch, the left-hander will be moving down the batting order — and it’s something that doesn’t faze the adaptable stroke player. With David Warner and Aaron Finch linking up at the top of the order for the first time in a T20 International since October 2017, Carey will be seen a lower-order hitter in the T20I home series against Sri Lanka.
The 28-year-old averaging just 13.8 in T20Is, will get to prove himself in his new-found role as he did in his stint at the England T20 competition, wherein playing for Sussex he averaged 37.7 with a strike rate of 152.6. “It [England T20 competition] was a good opportunity to learn about my game,” Carey was quoted as saying to foxsports.com.au.
“The World Cup too, coming in at the end, It’s something I see myself doing and getting better at finishing games of cricket,” he added.
Carey heaped praise on the Australian batting line up that is extremely strong up the order and in his new role it would be his responsibility to give the finishing touch. An art that is mastered by players like MS Dhoni and Jos Buttler.
“If you look around the world, (MS) Dhoni, (Jos) Buttler are very good at it. For me, I think I’m improving every time I go out there but it’s important I keep learning at the end.
“I think I’ve identified that opportunity to help us win games of cricket. (We have) the fireworks at the top of the order and hopefully they go big and bat through the innings. If not, there are going to be opportunities for someone through the middle to help finish off games of cricket for Australia and hopefully I can do that,” Carey added.
