ISL 2015: Chennai's rain and Mendoza drown Mumbai
In a rain-washed game of football at the Marina Arena, Chennaiyin FC grabbed a 3-0 win over a lackluster Mumbai City FC team and grabbed the lead in the race to the semi-final spot of ISL 2015. Mumbai, on the other hand, have extended their win-less streak to seven.
Heavy rain and a water-logged pitch delayed the start of the match, and once the match started, it rained goals at the Marina Arena.
Stiven Mendoza provided an early lead to the home team as he scored his 11th goal of the season. Chennaiyin midfielder Zakeer Mundampara put Mendoza through on goal with a lovely pass in behind the Mumbai defence. The Colombian striker outpaced and out-muscled Mumbai defender Frantz Bertin, before putting the ball past the goalkeeper.
Eight minutes later, Jeje doubled the lead for Chennaiyin. Dhanachandra Singh drifted in a cross from the left wing, and Mendoza, from the edge of the box, flicked it behind for Jeje to run on to. The Indian striker was assisted by the water-logged pitch, and the ball stopped before the goalkeeper could grab it. Jeje pounced on the ball and then chipped it over the goalkeeper.
Bernard Mendy scored Chennaiyin's third goal at the end of the first half. The move started from a free-kick before Thoi Singh set him through on goal with a delightful reverse pass. The French defender applied the finishing touches with a delightful lob over the on-rushing goalkeeper.
