The former Spanish international, who was part of the famous 'Galacticos' team, became the latest star to sign up for the Premier Futsal League, which is set to take place from July 15. The 40-year-old had retired from professional football in 2012 after his 3-year stint with Blackburn Rovers.

Salgado won four La Liga titles and two Champions League winners' medals during his 10-year stint with Spanish giants Real Madrid. The former Spanish international was one of the best right backs of his generation, and he ended his career with a three-year spell in the English Premier League.

Salgado will go up against the likes of Paul Scholes, Deco, and Futsal legend Falcao in the upcoming Premier Futsal League, and he is excited about the prospect.

"Futsal is an extremely underrated sport. It has been the breeding ground for some of the biggest names in football the world over and I'm glad Premier Futsal in India is creating a platform that can showcase the sport and give it its due. I think the talent the league has managed to draw is fantastic with not just futsallers like Falcao but also career football players like Paul Scholes and Deco taking part.

"It's almost nostalgic in a way to go up against these players again and I'm really looking forward to reliving the old days and reigniting those old rivalries, this time on the futsal court,” Salgado was quoted as saying by the PTI.

His arrival will further boost the popularity and reach of the newly planned Premier Futsal League. Indian cricket star Virat Kohli is the co-owner of the tournament, which will be the first-ever multinational futsal league. The league is yet to receive approval from the AIFF and FIFA, and the former is reportedly considering legal action against it. This new league has trampled the Indian governing body's plans of launching a futsal league of their own along with their media partner IMG.

The inaugural tournament will take place in Chennai, while Kolkata will host the final. The league will be played from July 15 and is set to be broadcast on Sony Picture Network.
