Federation Cup: AIFF keeps Aizawl waiting of Sunday's suspension
The AIFF, it seems, have created another mess ahead of the Fed Cup final, scheduled to take place on Saturday at Guwahati, between Aizawl FC and Mohun Bagan. Aizawl are yet to receive notification about the suspension of Joel Sunday, who has already picked up two yellow cards in the tournament.
According to the rules, a player is suspended for one match if he picks up two yellow cards in the tournament. Joel Sunday picked up his second booking of the Fed Cup in the second leg of their semifinal tie against Sporting Clube de Goa, and by the rules he should miss the final against Mohun Bagan.
However, Aizawl are yet to receive the official confirmation from the AIFF on this matter, and the Mizoram-based club have prepared for the game assuming Joel will be available for the final. The decision on Sunday's impending suspension was supposed to be taken during the manager's meeting on the eve of the final, however, the Match Commissioner's unavailability meant it had to be postponed to Saturday morning.
Joel Sunday has been a pivotal player in Aizawl's fairytale run in the tournament. The Nigerian forward scored the winner against Bengaluru in the first leg, then scored a brace in the second leg to help his team beat the newly crowned I-League champions. In the semifinal he scored the crucial opening goal against Sporting in the second leg, and his absence in the final could prove to be a huge blow for Jahar Das and his men.
