Manchester United, who sacked Louis van Gaal on Monday, made a swift move to capture Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho on Friday morning. The club confirmed the news on it’s official website, releasing a statement saying the manager has signed on a 3-year contract, with a one year extension option.

Jose Mourinho has been a serial winner and was rumoured to take over the Manchester club since January, immediately after being relieved of his duties by Chelsea FC. The Portuguese gaffer has won 22 trophies in his 14-year long management career, and he would be looking to bring back the glory years for Manchester United.

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward had some kind words to say, as he welcomed the former Chelsea boss to Old Trafford in the official statement.

"José is quite simply the best manager in the game today. He has won trophies and inspired players in countries across Europe and, of course, he knows the Premier League very well, having won three titles here.

"I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome him to Manchester United. His track record of success is ideal to take the club forward," Woodword said.

Mourinho also did not hide his elation to join one of Europe’s biggest clubs and told the official website, "To become Manchester United manager is a special honour in the game. It is a club known and admired throughout the world. There is a mystique and a romance about it which no other club can match.

"I have always felt an affinity with Old Trafford; it has hosted some important memories for me in my career and I have always enjoyed a rapport with the United fans.”

The three-year contract is expected to keep Mourinho at the club till 2019, with the option to stay till 2020.
