Robin van Persie feels it will be a "special occasion" for him when he returns to Old Trafford for the first time since joining Fenerbahce in 2015. The Dutch striker will face his former club in the Europa League when the two teams lock horns on Thursday.

"It will be a special occasion and a special game for me. I know Manchester United want to be in the Champions League, but it is how it is now and for me it is a very special group in the Europa League. In the last match I had a game against one of my first teams, Feyenoord, and next it’s United. I am looking forward to it," van Persie said in an interview with MUTV.

The former Arsenal captain joined Manchester United in 2012 and ended up winning the title in his very first season, sealing the title with a famous hat-trick against Aston Villa. He will play against his former side for the very first time and is under no illusions that the game will be an easy one.

"It will be tough for us. United are the favourites, but you never know what will happen. In general, I am looking forward to a nice evening and enjoying the whole experience," added the 33-year-old.

In his three years as an Old Trafford favourite, he scored 58 goals in 105 games. The Dutchman, who had a goal in every other game in the league for his new club last season, said that it would be special to play "at home" again.

"I am now playing for Fenerbahce and I want to do well for my team but of course it will be special to play 'at home' [Old Trafford] in a great stadium with great fans against a great team," van Persie concluded.
