Reports | Sergej Milinkovic-Savic in line for new contract amidst interest from Manchester United
Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is set for a brand new contract from the Serie A giants, which includes a wage rise and a 100 million-plus release clause. The 24-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United and PSG this summer, although no move materialized in the end.
Despite struggling to impose himself last season after a brilliant breakout 2017/18 season, Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic was still subject to intense speculation. The Serbian international was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United early in the summer window, with reports indicating that he was their top replacement for Paul Pogba.
But with Pogba opting to stay at Old Trafford, PSG was heavily linked with a move for Milinkovic-Savic. Yet in the end, neither move materialized, although both sides are still keeping an eye on the 24-year-old midfielder. That is Lazio’s biggest issue, but to combat that the Daily Mail are reporting that Lazio are set to offer Sergej Milinkovic-Savic a new deal.
The report further adds that the Serbian will get a wage rise and a €100 million-plus release clause added to his new contract. It is, essentially, a one-year extension to his current deal, which expires in 2023, but will be heavily based on performances bonuses with awards for every goal or assist. It will still be tough to keep the midfielder at the Stadio Olimpico, with Lazio president Claudio Lotito even going to say as such in a recent interview.
“Today, Lazio is a point of arrival. It’s no longer to be used as a ‘step up’ in quality. Last year I fought to keep Milinkovic-Savic. However, indeed – he will decide what kind of future he wants to have. He has fair and correct ambitions, we do not want to hold him back; he wants a top 10 club in the world. We hope the conditions are created for us to become one of those top clubs soon,” said Lotito to Sky Italia.
