According to the Athletic, Manchester United and Ajax are in advanced talks over a potential €45 million move for defender Lisandro Martinez with the Red Devils keen on signing him. The Argentine has attracted a lot of attention this summer with Arsenal also in advanced talks over a move.

After his move to Ajax in 2019, few expected Lisandro Martinez to feature consistently for the club but the versatile defender has done exactly that in the days since. The now 24-year-old has enjoyed a successful time at the club, playing as full-backs on either side while also featuring as a centre-back and defensive midfielder. That combined with the fact that he won Ajax’s player of the year for the 2021/22 season has seen Martinez heavily linked with a move away.

The 24-year-old has been touted with a move to Arsenal after they submitted a €40 million bid but reports have indicated that Manchester United are also overly keen on signing him. So much so, that the Athletic have reported that the Red Devils are now in advanced talks with Ajax over a move, having also submitted a €45 million bid including add-ons. The defender is reportedly open to signing for either the North Londoners or United which means that it’s up to the clubs now.

The report has also indicated that this could heat up over the weekend with Martinez yet to make a decision although Ajax are sticking to a price of at least €50 million including add-ons. Neither club have touched that fee as of yet but the Athletic has further reported that United may have edged ahead of Arsenal as the favourites to sign the Argentine because of new manager Erik ten Hag.
